OK – so by now, most of you know my favorite phrase in a lesson.... “Let’s try that a bit slower”
Yes, it is true that I completely believe in the power of slow playing. Neil Moore puts it this way “The slower you play, the quicker you will acquire the piece.” Learning to play slowly is not as easy as it sounds. (Especially when you watch it on the video at performance speed ...the natural urge is to try and match that! – RESIST!)
The longer I teach, the more I’m realizing that teaching my students how to practice slowly is about the most important thing I can do. Does that mean you can NEVER play it fast? Of course not. But in the learning stages it is vital to feed your brain “clean” information; not mistakes.
